Paint color is one of the most important things to consider when decorating your home. The shade you choose can either breathe life into a room or make it seem like a calm, quiet cave. That in itself isn’t a bad thing, as long as that was the look that you were going for. Painting a room is an ordeal, so you need to choose the right color the first time, rather than have to repaint it again a few days later. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Choose Your Mood
Believe it or not, colors have meanings. Blue tends to be calming and peaceful, which is why many hospital rooms and patient waiting rooms are this color. Turquoise is another calm color, and it usually means “clarity.” Green is the color of self-reliance, growth and balance, and so on. You need to consider what moods you want to convey in each room.
Look At Furniture and Fabrics
With that said, you also need to look at your existing furniture and any fabrics in the space. This includes your rug or carpeting, as well as any drapery. Also, if you have wood floors and baseboards, are they a warm shade of cherry, or a cool yellow pine? You need to pull a color out of your fabrics that also goes with any wood tones, in order to everything to be cohesive.
The lighting in your home matters, as it affects the exact shades of paint that you choose. For example, a color that you love when daylight is shining into your living room, will not be same shade in the evening when the lights are on. Some types of lights, such as fluorescent ones, throw off a blue cast, which will change the way that the paint looks on the walls. This is just one of the many things that you need to keep in mind when choosing a paint color.
Test a Sample
Lastly, don’t just choose a color based on the paint sample chips at the store. Purchase a pint of each of your top choices and test them out on the walls at home. The colors look quite different when they are on the walls, and you may find that a shade that you loved in the store based on the paint chip is something that you don’t quite like in person.
